Laser acne treatment (CPL/ND:YAG)
The laser therapist will choose the method of laser treatment for acne following a consultation. They will select the most suitable one CPL or ND:YAG on our Xlase Plus platform. It is also possible to use both treatment heads in a personalised treatment programme of your choice.
CPL:
Calibrated pulsed light (CPL) This is the latest technology, representing an improvement on IPL. One of the uses of this device is the treatment of acne vulgaris and rosacea. Light waves are absorbed by the bacteria responsible for causing acne, thereby destroying them. Another effect of the treatment is a reduction in the size of the sebaceous glands, which in turn reduces the amount of sebum secreted. Various mechanisms within the skin are utilised during the treatment of acne. Short wavelengths are absorbed by porphyrin and destroy the Propionibacterium acnes bacteria. Longer wavelengths heat the water in the dermis and cause the sebaceous glands to shrink, resulting in reduced sebum secretion. At the same time, the activation of fibroblasts stimulates the synthesis of collagen and other biomolecules, which improves skin firmness and density and prevents the possible formation of acne scars.
ND:YAG
The heat from this type of laser is used to stimulate collagen production and promote the growth of new cells to replace the damaged tissue in acne scars.
The first treatment is preceded by a dermatological consultation, during which we will discuss the treatment in detail, as well as any contraindications.
- It is recommended that the patient remains well hydrated
- Aspirin and other blood-thinning substances should be avoided
- Your skin must not be tanned or have any self-tanning product applied to it
- Important – 24 hours You should not drink alcohol before or after the procedure
- The skin should be clean – do not use creams or lotions
- the skin is cleansed
- the patient is given safety glasses
- ultrasound gel is applied
The treatment is painless; however, the patient may feel warmth and/or a slight burning sensation. To minimise any discomfort during the treatment, the device’s handpiece is cooled. Applying the gel may feel unpleasant due to the sensation of cold. Depending on the area being treated, the procedure can take between 20 and 30 minutes.
After the treatment, the sensations may be similar to those experienced after intense sunbathing or a mild sunburn. The skin may be red and warm, and you may also experience a burning sensation; for this reason, we apply cold compresses to the treated area. Tenderness and swelling at the treatment site may persist for anywhere from a few hours to a few days. With proper healing, the recovery period lasts around 3 days.
- You should treat your skin gently for 2–3 days after the treatment:
– particular attention to the cleanliness and hygiene of the treatment area
– wash with soap-free gel, alcohol-free toner or plain water
– avoid hot baths
– pat dry gently; do not rub or irritate the skin in any other way
– It is recommended to use soothing and regenerating creams 2–3 times a day - You must not drink alcohol for several days after the procedure
- Physical exercise, saunas and solariums are not recommended for a period of 4–5 days.
- For two weeks following the treatment, you must not use exfoliating cosmetics.
- Sunbathing is not permitted for 4 weeks following the procedure; it is recommended that you use sunscreen with an SPF of 50 or higher.
- It is recommended to take Vitamin C 1000 Plus and vitamin E supplements, as these promote healing and collagen regeneration (vitamin E also helps prevent the development of discolouration)
Rare complications following the procedure may include:
- redness and swelling – symptoms that occur immediately after treatment and should subside on their own after a few hours or, at most, a few days
- bruising or burns to the epidermis – conditions that may occur in people with very sensitive skin, a darker complexion or tanned skin
- dry, flaky skin – symptoms that may persist for several days after the treatment
- brown scabs – these flake off and disappear as the wound heals (on the face after 7–10 days, on the body after as long as about 3 weeks).
- Reduction in acne breakouts
- Reducing excess oiliness of the skin
- Prevention of acne scars
- A reduction in sebum production
- Lightening and reducing the depth of acne scars
